Lab 8

Using Packet Tracer

Exercise 1 uses the Packet Tracer Instructions PDF. Read it to use software on a Windows PC in a campus computer lab.

Using the Packet Tracer software mentioned above, follow the steps in the Packet Tracer Instructions to create a two-computer network and demonstrate that it works. For this exercise, report the result of the ipconfig /all command and the result of the ping 40.0.0.1 command. If you know how, you can turn in screenshot of the two Command Prompt screens.

Troubleshooting Your Local Subnet

The rest of the exercises use the following description.

Your computer is on a local subnet along with another computer and a router. Your computer's IP address is 32.128.0.39 /24, and your computer's MAC address is 11:11:11:11:11:11. Your computer's default gateway (router) is 32.128.0.7 /24. Your computer doesn't know the MAC addresses of anything else on its local subnet.

(a) George Polya says that to understand a problem, you can consider drawing a picture or using Packet Tracer to illustrate the setup.

(b) Your computer prepares to send two IP datagrams. The first is destined for 32.128.1.129 /24. Is this datagram's recipient on your computer's subnet? Demonstrate conclusively. The second IPdatagram is destined for 32.128.0.127 /24. Is this datagram's recipient on your computer's subnet? Demonstrate conclusively.

(c) Your computer sends two Layer-2 packets, one to each of the IP addresses of the previous exercise. How would your computer get the MAC addresses that it needs for these Layer-2 packets?

(d) Suppose that the operation of the previous question gave your computer the MAC address 33:33:33:33:33:33 for the first IP datagram; what machine is this the MAC address for? Suppose that the operation above gave you the MAC address 77:77:77:77:77:77 for your second IP datagram; what machine is this the MAC address for?

(e) Fill in the address fields below for each of the Layer-2 packets that your computer will send. Also label each address field with the device that it corresponds to ("your computer,'' "the other computer,'' "the router'')
